good sound quality for my car radioNeeded to replace my original, although this doesn't cut it, at least I can still listen to it during essential times when only this or Hot Rail will do. Viva la vinyl,,,heard one song on the radio and liked it enough to order the CDALL the songs are great...cool sound ....now one of my favorite listen to'sCD is good quality but the jewel case was cracked.This is boring, there is no theme, there are no highs and lows and the cd just aimlessly meanders.I have seen Calexico on Austin City Limits and one of the late night talk shows (Leno? Letterman? Conan?). They were fascinating both visually and sonically. I have several live downloads and they put on a cool show. I made my own compilation and the disc is awesome.This cd just does not do it for me. There are no bad songs on it but...there is hardly anything exciting, nothing really knocks my socks off.This may be one of those bands that need to be experienced live rather than through the studio.This hardly resembles the totally cool band I saw perform on Austin City LimitsWe heard a tract from this CD at the end of a Soprano's season. Glad we bought the entire CD. Not our usual genre, but very good!excellent sonic sounds from back in the day!Awesome, Awesome cd!! If you like slow instrumental music that has a mexican sound you'll adore this. The song Over Your Shoulder is by far my favorite, it was worth the money just for that song. There are some songs that have vocals as well. If you put the cd on it kind of just sweeps you to another place.Questo è il disco più importante e rappresentativo dei Calexico.E’ stato un colpo di genio, nato da due musicisti ben coltivati dal punto di vista artistico: Joey Burns e John Convertino.Ne risulta un lavoro curatissimo nell’intenzione, nella scelta degli strumenti e nella cura del suono.Unico nel suo genere, lo si può ascoltare come fosse una perfetta colonna sonora, rivolta a spazi infiniti o al primo Sergio Leone, quello versione western o di Giù la Testa.Io, in punta dei piedi, ma con certezze, lo abbinerei anche alla lettura del notevolissimo Absolutely Nothing (storie e sparizioni nei deserti americani) di Giorgio Vasta e Ramak Fazel per le edizioni Quodlibet Humboldt.The Black Light, dietro ad un lavoro raffinatissimo in studio di registrazione, si muove tra Tex-Mex e Americana, con punte di Jazz e Blues, miste a sonorità francesi, o altre (Minas de Cobre) che mi riportano addirittura a Scheherazade di Korsakov, e, su un altro versante, al sound degli Shadows.Il suono? Come suona su un buon impianto Hi-Fi?Andate sul sicuro, anche con il CD, perché è curato e mostra equilibrio nel mixaggio, trasparenza e dinamica.Confezione in plastica con note essenziali nel libretto interno, ringraziamenti (anche a Corman McCarthy) e fotografie d’epoca delle città (città…) di Calexico e di Mexicali nel 1917.Sono passati 21 anni dall’uscita del colpo di genio e i Calexico sono da tempo un nome ben conosciuto, se non venerato.Questo album, per il suo ventennio, è uscito l’anno scorso come Anniversary Edition, in doppio CD, col secondo disco altrettanto interessante.Riprendendo alcune parole che avevo scritto a proposito della Anniversary Edition:“ … se conoscete questo album andate oltre. Se invece non lo conoscete non perdetelo, perché è assolutamente affascinante. Magari vi scombussolerà un po’ o vi darà l’idea di stufare, ma piano piano, come per magia, vi prenderà e trascinerà con sé; e nel corso del tempo continuerete ad ascoltarlo, perché The Black Light è un lavoro che trascende il tempo".Auf THE BLACK LIGHT spielen Calexico bereits all die Stärken aus, die sie in den folgenden Jahren zu einem Fixstern am Alternative-Himmel machen sollten: kalifornischer Surf-Rock & Slide-Gitarren ("The Ride Part II", "Frontera") gepaart mit mexikanischen Mariachi-Trompeten ("Minas de Cobre") und dunklen Lyrics über mexikanische Flüchtlinge ("The Black Light") oder andere gesellschaftliche Aussenseiter ("Trigger", "Stray"). Ausnahmeschlagzeuger John Convertino greift immer wieder auch mal zum Jazz-Besen oder bittet zum Walzer, und Instrumentalstücke mit Kontrabass, Akkordeon oder Vibraphone runden den eigenwilligen Sound ab. Leadsänger/Gitarrist Joey Burns traut sich in dieser Frühphase der Band meist noch nicht über einen dunklen Sprechgesang hinaus, und THE BLACK LIGHT ist dadurch noch einen Hauch dunkler als andere Calexico-Alben, was die Platte weniger partytauglich, aber umso atmosphärischer macht wenn man sie alleine hört. Ich habe im vergangenen Sommer eine Woche in Tucson/Arizona und der umgebenden Sonora Wüste verbracht, und dabei dieses ältere Calexico Album neu wiederentdeckt und lieben gelernt (insbesondere die dunkle Ballade "Missing" war mir bisher völlig entgangen) - für mich ihr bestes Werk neben FEAST OF WIRE!pour beaucoup (y compris dans les critiques Amazon) cet album est le meilleur du groupe Calexico. Certes l'originalité des compositions dans la démarche d'un label indépendant et dans l'esprit du courant "americana" est a souligner. il y a (à mon avis) du très bon qui alterne avec du passable sur une bande son qui nous fait voyager dans l'extrême ouest des USA et flirter avec la frontière mexicaine. C'est-impossible de ne pas reconnaitre la patte de ce grand groupe- bien l'esprit que porte Calexico qui plane ici. Je préfère cependant les albums plus récent (grand public?) comme Algiers où la cohésion de l'ensemble des morceaux et des mélodies plus accrocheuses ne perdent pas en cours de route le mélomane-voyageur. Chacun a bien le droit d'avoir sa façon de découvrir de nouvelles contrées...Calexico, c'est au départ un groupe récréatif gravitant autour de la nébuleuse Giant Sand (dont on retrouve d'ailleurs le leader Howe Gelb sur ce « Black Light », accompagnant ses deux amis Burns et Convertino).Ce disque est un voyage. Au travers du sud des Etats-Unis, dans l'Arizona, le Texas, le Nouveau-Mexique, ... En tous cas, pas très loin de la frontière mexicaine. La musique évoque le Ry Cooder de « Paris, Texas », du Tom Waits ensoleillé, du JJ Cale mariachi, des Lobos au ralenti.Tempo somnolent, économie instrumentale, nombreux titres instrumentaux. « The Black Light » installe une ambiance. Brûlante, incitant à la sieste, Corona bien fraîche à portée de main.Par son titre, « The Black Light » est à l'opposé du « White Light / White Heat » du Velvet Underground. Autant Lou Reed et sa troupe balançaient une oeuvre urbaine et violente, autant ce Calexico est un Cd imprégné de tranquillité campagnarde. Il n'est pas interdit d'apprécier les deux.Calecico ist wie eine Mischung aus Santana und Bob Dylan und mexikanische Mariachi- Musik.Dazu die Dynamic von einem elektrischen Gitarristen, der Santana- Qualitäten hat.the Black Light ist wohl mehr Instrumental, aber deswegen nicht weniger interessant
