I was looking for a microscope to allow me to examine insects, pond microorganisms in conjunction with my higher mag compound microscope, fungi as well as wood samples (sections for identification) and microcircuits (failure analysis, soldering, repair).Following the advice of a friend mycologist, I selected the most important features: variable zoom (switching between objectives can be ackward), upper 360deg LED ringlight illumination (lower illumination is rarely useful), magnification not greater than 45x (focus at high mag is finicky, depth of field is poor), high eyepoint ocular eyepieces (for people wearing glasses).I therefore ordered this model and quickly received it from Amazon in two days (I am not even Prime...).The model is very sturdy, professional like. The optics gives surprisingly sharp images, details of insects structure I could not imagine seeing. Needless to say I have been very satisfied with this purchase.I wanted the option of installing a camera (optical tube) and was able to use the 23mm camera I currently use on my other (compound) Omax microscope.Strange thing with the LED ring light: the unit came in its separate box and bears the AmScope trade name with the LED-64S model number (I thought AmScope was a competitor... Maybe they collaborate on supplying optional parts ?). Minor negative points: this ring light is fitted on the scope body with three long set screws and the resulting fit is slightly shaky for an otherwise very solid piece of equipment; the toggle switch of this ring light also needs more pressure than expected to turn on and off which is not helping the situation.Nice surprise: although based on the product description I was expecting a 11 1/2in post height, the unit I got has a column height of 14 inches which give me more leeway to inspect big samples (like mushrooms on wood logs or big rocks). Since the microscope body can swivel 360deg around the post, one can be creative in the odd situations when it is needed and jack up the scope on a thick spacer (books, wood stock) and inspect things that are really thick.Other than that the controls are simple, smooth and easy to use.In summary this is an excellent microscope for the serious hobbyist or aspiring scientist.
