Considering how close I live to McCabe's Guitar Shop and the fact that I stood in a small crowded record store to listen to Carla Olson's short-lived acoustic outfit around this same time, I have to groan at having missed this February 1990 show.Olson's and Clark's voices blend wonderfully on here. There's a little more brittle edge to Clark's tenor which only serves to make it match with Carla's voice even better than on the studio album. Typically for a McCabe's set, Clark and Olson are in no hurry--they let the songs stretch over generous lengths. They share Carla's career classic "Number One is to Survive" and also pick up another Textones tune "Photograph." They do Gene's then-new "Your Fire Burning" and "Love Wins Again." They visit older moments in Gene's career such as the great "This Train Leaves Here This Morning." They cover a great John Prine tune "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness." This was a great evening to attend. The problem is that it is not that easy to be there on this CD. The performances are very ad hoc; I doubt that anyone had prepared for this show. The recorded sound is adequate but no better than that. When you listen to this disc, you just wish you could see Gene and Carla interacting and hear the resonations of the instruments.I did manage to attend one of those final shows Gene Clark did at the Cinegrill in Hollywood. I saw a Revox 10 inch reel to reel taking it all down. It is the Cinegrill show that should be released. It featured an electric band that was obviously thoroughly rehearsed offering up some of Gene's new songs such as "Your Fire Burning" and also terrifically re-invented versions of his older classics. How about a tough bar-band arrangement for "She Darked the Sun?" How about a version of "Eight Miles High" that finally sounds like a Gene Clark song? I'm waiting for the Cinegrill show.
