THE STORY OF LIGHT, a new solo album of original material by virtuoso guitarist and visionary composer, Steve Vai. The title comes out on Favored Nations Entertainment, the label Vai founded in 1999. It's sprawling and expressive 12 song set continues a conceptual and cosmic narrative arc begin on the artists acclaimed 2005 album, REAL ILLUSIONS: REFLECTIONS.
Just saw Vai last night--9/16/12--at a rediculously small venue, in Lebanon, NH, for a talent such as his (and his band)...that is why I bought the album today...and am listening as I am typing this...It was an exceptional show, as I am being reminded while listening...I could not recommend any more strongly to buy this album, and to also see him before the Band heads to Europe...Also, you should consider buying other albums of his...If we do not support true musical talent such as Vai and his band, then we will be relegated to the Brittany Spears & Lady GaGas...Think of what a Sisyphusian torure that would be...the venue at which I saw him was around 800 seats...he should be playing in much larger venues, but people have to go out and see him, so promoters will book bigger venues for him...nudge, nudge...This irony did not escape me as I watched Vai and the band rip it up...Lady GaGa will sell 10's of thousands of tix for a show...but then this is why we have more people voting for an American Idle--or is it Idol?!)than in a presidential primary a/or election, and then look at those results...we have charlatans to choose from, who, as these performers are, sellouts...(yes, both sides of the aisle)...as a matter of fact...the political theater that we get pushed on us by a compliant media makes Hollywood look like dilettantes..."and the Oscar goes to"--Pelosi, McCain, Boehner, and yes, Obama & Romney... Cloony, should take acting lessons from his bud in the WH...But, I digress...apologiesIn another review, someone said that you have to think out of the box for Vai's music...well, yes... especially if you consider what is defined as "The Box"...he, conceptually, is always trying differnt things...good for him...would we want him to use the same "formula" repeatedly? There is something I noticed at the show (which I pointed out to my nephew, who is learning guitar and bass)...that Vai does not write songs, he composes music, which in contrast to the banal music which seems to be the standard today, is an important point...and that in itself may be THE out of the box aspect...One cannot help but notice that Vai makes considerable effort to not be a Johnny-1-note, as he dishes from an eclectic repertoire, which is reminiscent of one of his mentors, Joe Satriani...So, if you are thinking about buying any of Vai's stuff, just do it...there is something for everyone in there..if you don't like one particular song, no problem, just go to the next one, because you will like that one!And also, check out his website (vai.com) and check the tour dates...then go see him...you won't be disappointed!!!!And don't forget to tell a couple of friends!
