This is an epistolary novel between a young man who goes to fight in the Boxer Rebellion and his beloved at home in Russia. As the story goes along they become separated in both time and geography but eventually meet again. A typical Russian "thought" novel that details the ups and downs of life, separation from family and friends and how seemingly small events have huge consequences. For instance, one character has an attack of dysentery, runs off to settle things and his friends are all killed by an artillery shell. I thought the depictions of boring military life when deployed were spot on, separated by periods of shall we say excitement. I also appreciated the irony of some of the characters thinking war between civilized powers was over this a scant few years before the Russo Japanese war and WWI.A thought provoking novel, easy to read and worth the time to do so.
